- Throughout the UNE Core Handbook, I was able to find several pieces of information that were applicable to my classes this semester. For example, the third section of the Core handbook touched upon the need for courses that challenge the ideas of individuals within the professions that may connect with the chosen major. They emphasize that by students taking these courses, students are able to develop their thinking process and perspectives through research and other situations that exercise the need for critical thinking. This specifically relates to my Controversial Topics in Education course, which focuses on analyzing negative impacts topics such as discrimination, environment, and other negative factors within the classroom can have on a student’s experience within school. Primarily, we have focused on the implicit biases that educators and individuals tend to have and how those predetermined expectations or actions can impact a student’s quality of life both in and outside of the classroom.
