Discussion: 

What are the rods that are referenced when discussing width? Are only they a form of measurement that was used when building things such as homes and roads? 

Is the pendleton referenced on page 209 where the brand pendleton got its name and inspiration for its brand? 

Was the mill still profitable towards the end of Capt Scamman’s life? 

When they refer to “Kennebec” on page 215, do they mean Kennebunk? If so, what caused the name to be changed over time? 

1713: Pacification→ everyone returned to permanent settlements 

  • Temporary settlements ie forts and garrisons were left 
  • Town was not highly populated but was industrially prosperous 

March 1717: They needed municipal body of saco 

  •  Ended 30 yrs of no group committee 
  • Humphry Scamman → town clerk 
  • Richard Simpson, H Scamman, Andrew Brown→ selectman and assessors.

March 1719– First Meeting held in Biddeford 

  • 50 families would be included into the title 
  • H.Scamman & Benjamin Haley are representatives 

April 1720: Meeting about land divides

  • Dividing town lands

October 1716

  • Samuel Walker buys ⅔ of.Blackmans purchase tp William Pepperell jr 
  • Peperelll bought the remaining tract but then sold half of it to Nathaniel Ware and Humphert Scamman jr.
    • They bult a double sawmill on the old Blackman mill and house for workers 
    • Caused roads to be build 

Death of Capt Scamman

  • Was the only proprietor resident 
  • Ran the mill until he died in 1734

Chapter 2

Native American Issues 

  • Believed that Native AMericans behavior is what prevented the town from developing more rapidly 
  • French supplied Natives with weapons to defend their land against the English (1713) 

1717→ Conference in Arrowsick 

Summer 1721 → Conference of French and Natives 

  • Natives were present 
  • Letter from Natives said they were going to destroy English settlements unless removed within 3 weeks 

1722

  • 9 families captured 
  • Houses in Brunswick were burned 
  • Gov and Council declared war on natives and other individuals unloyal to the English colonies 

1723

  • Attacks made in NH and Maine 
  • Military officers families were being targeted & killed 

1724

  • Father Ralle & Indian VIllage Destroyed 
  • John Stackpole went out into the waters and declared himself basically a prisoner 

The Practice of Problem-Based Learning 

  • People were more motivated to find the solution when presented with an issue 
  • Group work was productive because there were new ideas and experiences 
  • Issues occurred when not all group members put in effort or did not compromise
  • Abandoned projects once they got to difficult
